Communion Dresses – Tips & Advice when shopping
for a Communion Dress online or at a shop

Browsing online can be a terrific way to shop for a First Holy Communion dress.

After all, it’s convenient since you can shop in the comfort of home – even while still in your pajamas if you want. It gives you a wide range of choices since you are not limited to whatever the shop can fit into its inventory and it is easy to make comparisons side by side.

Plus, since online shops are open 24/7, you never to need to hurry and make it before the shop closes.
However, online shopping is not without its challenges. You can’t feel the material or try the Communion dress on to see how it fits. You also are unable to see the Communion dress on your daughter to determine if the Communion dress style flatters her size and shape.

To help you with your online shopping efforts, we at One Stop First Communion Shop have developed a Communion dress shopping guide to today’s most popular, fashionable – and flattering – Communion dresses and Communion dress styles. Take a look:

First, the basics
Many traditional Communion dresses share common characteristics. For example, the vast majority are white in colour with some combination of satin or taffeta and a soft, flowing skirt.

Some of the differences come in with the details. While some Communion dresses are made with classic taffeta and accented with a few pearl beads, others feature elaborate beading, detailed embroidery and delicate lace. Other Communion dresses are accented with ruffles, bows, ribbons, rhinestones, rosettes and crystals.

These details make each First Communion dress special and unique, but when it comes down to it, what will actually make your daughter shine on her special day will be the style of the Communion dress. This is what will flatter her shape whether she is tall, petite, plus-size, average or hard-to-fit.

There are generally five popular styles of Communion dresses: Ballerina, classic, full-length, modern and traditional.

Ballerina Length Communion Dresses

  • Ballerina Length Communion Dresses – The ballerina style Communion dress has a simple bodice and a graceful, full-flowing skirt. It’s perfect for any body type.
Classic Communion Dresses
  •  Classic Communion dresses feature clean lines and classic styling. The Communion dress typically has sleeves and comes in a variety of modest skirt lengths from mid-calf, to tea-length. Because of these features, the classic Communion dress remains the most popular style of Communion dresses today. It is well suited for petite girls as well as those who are a little bit larger.
Full Length Communion Dresses
  • Full Length Communion dresses – A full-length communion dress is tailored to touch the floor elegantly. This Communion dress style may feature all types of details for a personalised look and looks fantastic on taller girls.

  • Modern Communion dresses may follow trends that are popular with bridal dresses. These Communion dress styles and features change from year to year, so have an open conversation with your daughter if you have any concerns or think the look is too grown-up or mature for her.
  • Traditional Communion dresses are most often referred to as a mini version of a bridal gown. This is often because in addition to the elegant beading and iridescent pearls, this Communion dress features a full, flowing shirt and is often accessorised with veiled headpieces and/or white gloves.

Now, some basic tips
Many girls will want a modern style of Communion dress that mimics current fashion trends. They want what their friends are wearing and may balk at your more traditional choices. Sometimes can you can find a happy middle, but no matter what the trend, guide you daughter to a Communion dress style that will flatter her shape and look like it made just for her. Keep these tips in mind:
  • Sleeveless, spaghetti straps and halter styles are popular in modern Communion dresses. If your daughter has larger upper arms, there is no need to shy away from this Communion dress style as you can purchase a Communion jacket, shawl or wrap for the First Communion ceremony. In fact, some parishes require this for modesty purposes
  • If your daughter is petite, it may be best to steer clear of longer Communion dresses and jackets that can actually make her appear shorter. Focus on Communion dresses with embellishments near the neckline to elongate her appearance
  • Taller girls will want to make sure that the Communion dress length is properly tailored to their unique height. They can wear shorter Communion dresses at mid-calf, but make sure that is where the hem falls. If you buy a tea-length Communion dress, for example, you don’t want it to end up falling at the knee because of her height
  • Avoid belts or sashes at the waistline if your daughter is thicker in the stomach area as these accents will attract the eye to this area
  • If your daughter has sensitive skin it is a good policy to stay away from Communion dresses with lace or a lot of busy accents. Intricate details such as pearls, beading and sequins are beautiful, but can cause irritation.
